Our Blue Ribbon Judging Committee, made up of industry experts and venture capitalists, will review a profile of each company in advance of the conference, and then tour the exhibitor showcase the morning of. The committee will then select 3 of the participating companies as "Technology Pace Setters". At intervals between speakers, these companies will be invited to give a special 5 minute introduction to their company to the entire conference audience in the main meeting room. In addition, conference attendees will vote on the exhibitors and choose by popular vote winners of 3 awards. In order of registration, as space permits, the other participants will be invited to present 5 minute introductions in between speakers in the break-out tracks.

Brian Williams, Co-Founder and CEO, Viget Labs

As co-founder and CEO, Brian leverages his background in web consulting, design, and technology to set the strategic vision for Viget Labs. He is actively involved in each client engagement and provides expert insights, as well as quality oversight, helping to ensure the success of every client project. Brian is a 2004 graduate of the exclusive Mindshare program, an invitation-only network of successful entrepreneurs. Prior to co-founding Viget Labs in 1999, Brian was an Engagement Manager with Tallan / CMGI Solutions, where he was responsible for establishing an office in Boulder, Colorado. Brian studied both Systems Engineering and Studio Arts at the University of Virginia, where he earned his B.S. degree.

Brad Feld, Managing Director, Foundry Group & Mobius Venture Capital

Brad has been an early stage investor and entrepreneur for over 20 years. Prior to co-founding Foundry Group, he co-founded Mobius Venture Capital and, prior to that, founded Intensity Ventures, a company that helped launch and operate software companies and later became a venture affiliate of the predecessor to Mobius Venture Capital.

Previously, Brad served as chief technology officer of AmeriData Technologies. AmeriData acquired Feld Technologies, a firm he founded in 1987 that specialized in custom software applications. Brad had grown Feld Technologies into one of Boston's leading software consulting firms prior to the acquisition. He also directed the diversification into software consulting at AmeriData, a $1.5 billion publicly-traded company which was acquired by GE Capital in 1995.

Brad currently serves on the board of directors of a number of private companies, including ePartners, Gold Systems, Judy's Book, NewsGator, Rally Software, and StillSecure.

In addition to his investing efforts, Brad has been active with several non-profit organizations and currently is chairman of the National Center for Women & Information Technology and sits on the boards of the Community Foundation Serving Boulder Country and the Colorado Conservation Trust. He has previously been a member of the board of directors of the Young Entrepreneurs Organization and he founded the Boston and Colorado chapters. Brad is a nationally recognized speaker on the topics of venture capital investing and entrepreneurship and writes widely read and well respected blogs at www.feld.com and www.askthevc.com.

Brad holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Management Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Brad is also an avid art collector and long-distance runner. He has completed eight marathons as part of his mission to run a marathon in each of the 50 states.

Melissa Bradley, Director of Investments, CIT

Melissa Bradley joined CIT in 2006 as director of Investment Services with an extensive background in investing and entrepreneurship. At CIT, Bradley is responsible for sourcing and conducting due diligence on companies, closing investment transactions and maintaining board-level relations with portfolio companies in support of CIT’s GAP Funds. Prior to CIT, Bradley was founder and managing director of New Capitalist™. In this role she facilitated over $20MM in private equity transactions for seed stage companies, generated an average of 20 percent return on behalf of investors, and created proprietary investment vehicles instrumental in capital sourcing for minority-owned firms. Bradley is also the founder of Positive Impact™ - a collaborative initiative to promote diverse voices and visions within independent media launched at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. As part of this initiative Bradley authored “Introduction to Media Investing for the Creative and Investment Communities” - a practical step by step “how to” guide designed to give media makers detailed instructions on prospecting, receiving, managing and returning an investment. Bradley sits on the board of Social Venture Network, Tides Network and Tides Foundation and is a Board of Governor at Georgetown University. Bradley’s educational background includes graduation from Georgetown University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the School of Business, and a Master’s in Business Administration in Marketing from American University.

Jonathan Aberman, Managing Director, Amplifier Venture Partners

Jonathan is the founder and Managing Director of Amplifier Ventures, a group of early stage venture capital funds focused on emerging software and technology businesses. Amplifier, formed in 2005, is currently invested in Defywire, FlatBurger, Hook Mobile, iBelong Networks and Zenoss. Amplifier’s investment team has deep Internet industry experienced, gained through leadership positions at companies such as AOL, Network Solutions, Service Bench, Verisign, Sun and Tivoli. Amplifier also operates an online social community, the Amplifier Network which has a large membership of entrepreneurs and leading technology service providers. Jonathan is an Adjunct Professor at the Smith School of Business, University of Maryland and writes regularly on venture capital topics, including through his Amplified blog. Jonathan is currently on the Board of Directors of Amplifier portfolio companies Defywire, FlatBurger, Hook Mobile and IBelong Networks.

Jonathan received his undergraduate degree in Political Science and Economics with honors from The George Washington University where he was Phi Beta Kappa. He holds a Masters in International Economics with Distinction from The London School of Economics. Mr. Aberman is the recipient of Law degrees from both Cambridge University and New York University School of Law. Prior to becoming a venture investor Jonathan was part of the senior management of a number of well known national technology law firms, and worked extensively in the venture industry. He also has prior professional experience as an investment banker, arbitrage trader and Economist with various international investment banks in London, England.

Tom Cohen - Founder, PTC Advisors

As the founder of PTC Advisors, Tom’s focus has been primarily on the media and new media worlds. He has been an investment banker for, and consultant to, a large number of media companies such as Time Life, Time Inc., The New York Times, The National Broadcasting Company (“NBC”), Martha Stewart Living and Rolling Stone Magazine. In addition, Tom has been very active in advising entrepreneurs as their ideas evolved from small ventures to mid-sized companies; helping them craft both successful growth strategies; securing their financing and ultimately executing their acquisitions by major industry players. From 1998 to 2001, Tom was also a Special Venture Partner with Flatiron Partners, In these various capacities he has been able to work with both established companies and startups. Recent deals include transactions for Kidzbop and Threadless.com.

Prior to his work in New Media and the Internet, Tom spent four years acting as Chief Executive Officer of the New York based brokerage firm of Herzfeld and Stern. Tom received a BA from Williams College and an MBA from Columbia University. Tom lives in New York with his wife and daughter.

Phil Bronner - Novak Biddle Venture Partners

Philip Bronner joined Novak Biddle Venture partners in 1999 and is focused on investments in information technology. Prior to joining Novak Biddle he was founder of a media technology company. In addition, he served as a management consultant with McKinsey & Co. in New York advising high-tech clients on corporate strategy and worked as a software engineer at IBM.

At Novak Biddle, Phil serves as a director for Approva, Logic Library, Vision Chain, InGrid, Netcordia, Freewebs and Clearspring. He also leads Novak Biddle's investment in Panasas and is a board observer for Specktrum K12. Past board observer seats include: AnswerLogic (acquired by Primus Knowledge Systems), and N.E.W. Customer Service Companies.

Phil earned a BS in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University; a Juris Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Law; and a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Phil currently serves on the Alumni Advisory Board for Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science and is a board member for In2Books, a Washington, DC-based reading and literacy program.

Kiran Hebbar

Kiran Hebbar is a Principal and Kauffman Fellow at Valhalla Partners. He has over ten years of technology, software development and marketing experience in companies spanning software, Internet, and technology-enabled services domains.

Prior to joining Valhalla Partners, Kiran was the Director of Product Management at RichFX, a venture-backed Internet applications company which provided rich media and web2.0 solutions to online retailers. Kiran orchestrated the conceptualization, development and market launch of RichFX's market leading SaaS platform.

Before RichFX, Kiran was a Product Manager at Siebel Systems where he managed CRM products for high-tech, semiconductor and industrial manufacturing verticals. Kiran began his career as a software engineer at Bentley Systems, a $400M profitable PLM company, where he led the development team for mechanical CAD software products and managed offshore development partners. Kiran has also worked at Mellon Ventures in the software and IT services investment team.

Kiran has an MBA from the Wharton School, a Bachelor’s in Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and an M.S. in Engineering from the University of Maryland.

Frank Gruber – Founder, Somewhat Frank & Sr. Product Manager, AOL



As a senior product manager for AOL, Frank is responsible for the recently launched myAOL Personalization Suite. A former consultant for several Fortune 500 companies in the Chicago and Boston area, Frank also developed online product strategies for Apartments.com and Tribune Interactive, a subsidiary of the Tribune Company and the Technology Services Group.

Frank Gruber is a co-founder of TECH cocktail, a web/tech/business mixer event which connects the local technology and business in a number of under served communities like Chicago, Washington D.C., Boston and soon more. Frank's expert analysis on Web 2.0 and emerging technologies have been featured in TechCrunch, iMediaConnection, Technology Evangelists and on Somewhat Frank.

An avid blogger and active member of the blogoshpere with a wealth of experience in web technology and product development, Mr. Gruber received his Master's Degree in Computer Information Systems from Northwestern University, and his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Information Systems from Purdue University.

John May – Founder and Managing Partner, New Vantage Group



John May is the founder and managing partner of New Vantage Group, a Vienna, VA firm that innovatively mobilizes private equity into early-stage companies and provides advisory services to both funds and private investors. Mr. May’s experience in private equity capital over the last 20 years ranges from venture capital fund management to angel investing.

Mr. May co-founded The Dinner Club, an investment group of 60 regional angels who collectively invested in regional early-stage ventures. A larger private investor pool, the eMedia Club with 75 members, followed it, and in 2000, the Washington Dinner Club with 75 members was started. Active Angel Investors, a “pledge” fund was created in 2003. New Vantage Group administers all of these groups. Additionally, in 2006, New Vantage Group partnered with Focus Enterprises in the launch of Seraphim Capital, an expansion-stage, UK venture capital fund.

Mr. May has been at the forefront of the angel investor movement. In 1991, he co-founded the Investors' Circle, a national non-profit group of 125 family and institutional investors working to grow the social venture capital industry. Additionally, in 1996, he co-founded and became executive director of the Private Investors Network, an angel network sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association, which he led until 2002. John is now Chairman of the Angel Capital Association (formerly a program of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation), is a lead instructor for the "Power of Angel Investing" seminars, and is co-author of two books, Every Business Needs an Angel (Crown Business: 2001), and State of the Art: An Executive Briefing on Cutting-Edge Practices in American Angel Investing (Darden Publishing: 2003).

Mr. May holds a Masters in Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Arts from Earlham College.

He is married, has two adult children and resides in McLean, Virginia.

Don Rainey

Mr. Rainey joined the Grotech Capital Group in September, 2007 as a general partner. Until recently, Don was a general partner in Intersouth Partners, a venture capital firm based in Durham, North Carolina with $775M under management. Mr. Rainey was formerly an entrepreneur with a track record of a number of successful businesses.

Don was president of Attitude Network, one of the first entertainment networks on the Internet, which was sold to TheGlobe.com in 1999. Mr. Rainey developed and executed complete business strategy for this funded start-up. Managed all operational issues related to 4 offices (LA, NY, Seattle, UK). During tenure, the company value increased from startup to eventual sale to TheGlobe.com for $49M in 1999. Mr. Rainey also served as a founding Board member for Accipiter and served on the BOD of Accipiter through its acquisition by CMGI in 1998.
